Miami University continues to rake in verbal commitments from top recruits, and the latest comes from Shelby High School tight end Michael Shepherd.
The Class of 2027 prospect chose the Redhawks yesterday over Kent State. Miami was the 6-foot-4, 220-pound tight end’s first offer last year following the team’s academic mega camp.
“Miami offered me in June last year after a camp they held on their field,” he said. “They were my first offer so the feeling was surreal and exciting, just knowing the feeling of getting your first offer and realizing the dream of playing college football is possible.”
“They told me they saw amazing potential in me and said they wanted to continue to grow this relationship,” he added. “It’s been a great relationship and now stronger than ever with the commitment.”
Shepherd made quick connections with head coach Chuck Martin and tight ends coach Johnny Alyward, now in his third year with the program. Other teams who have been in-touch with Shepherd include Ohio, Western Michigan, and Eastern Michigan, with Duke as the only Power 4 team.
“I stayed in touch with them but Miami took the reigns by far,” Shepherd said. “I want to work on gaining weight and lifting more so I can prepare myself for the physicality of college football. After watching multiple games and practices in person, you can tell that there is a step that needs to be taken in order to play at that level.”
