Pike High School (Ind.) linebacker Willie Chapman gave Miami University (Ohio) his verbal commitment two weeks ago.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound, Class of 2027 prospect was offered on April 23 and wasted no time making his decision for the Redhawks, who have a large recruiting footprint in the Hoosier State.
“I couldn’t stop smiling when they (offered) along with my family,” Chapman said. “The factors that led to my decision was my personal fit, academics, coaching staff, and environment and when visiting all boxes where checked, especially when evaluating me and showing me what they liked about me and the one-on-one time with multiple coaches to build a relationship.”
Chapman had just two other offers from Central Michigan and Ball State. For Chapman, he was able to develop relationships with Central Michigan coach Sean Cronin and Ball State defensive coordinator Jeff Knowles. But it was ultimately the Redhawks who sealed the deal, and right now, Chapman is fired up about the opportunity and focused on taking Class 6A Pike to a state championship.
“I appreciate both very much for recruiting me and showing me so much love throughout the entire process and I have made a great bond with both coaches,” he said. “The aspect of my game that I want to work on the most as a high school football player is my IQ and field sense as a whole, such as knowing what’s going to happen before it does and understanding the sticks and common plays that other teams run in certain circumstances.”
Pike opens up the season on Aug. 21 in a home game against Zionsville.
