Illinois HS Football

Sophomore Spotlight: Jax Baker, WR, Stevenson High School (Ill.)

When did you start playing football? How did your interest start?

I started playing football when I was eight years old. I fell in love with the game when I would watch my idol play, Odell Beckham Jr. When I saw him make the one-handed catch by the pylon, that inspired me a lot to play the wide receiver position. My interest also started with my dad getting me into football. I found a love for the game and I loved catching the ball.

What motivates you to play the game every day?

What motivates me every day is when I played my sophomore season, we just finished our Week 9 game, and our JV coaches would choose who would be called up for varsity.  All of the receivers got called up except for me, so they put a fire in my chest to go harder every day. When something  gets hard I just push through it even more because I think of that day when they got called up but me.  What also motivated me was starting at a new school. I have to prove my coaches and my teammates that I won’t let them down and I will give it my all.

What part of football do you enjoy the most?

The part of football I enjoy the most is the competition. The game of football competition makes you better if you go against a higher ranked cornerback as you. That makes you better and makes you more stronger, that’s what I like. The stronger and better competition you go against, the more better you will be. I love catching the ball. It feels like everything is silent and it is just you and the ball and you have to go up and make that play.

How have you been planning over the off-season to make your team better and win state?

To make us go to state we have the team during lunch, go down to the coaches office and we go over our plays and game plans. We prepare every day for what is going to happen and make sure we are ready. I train seven days a week and I love it. I never get tired of the work because I know we have to show everyone that you can’t count us out. We push ourselves every morning in the weight room to get better and better because we have to prove something to everyone. We go to the park, we throw routes, and we do field work and with my new teammates. It sure does help a lot.

What are you looking for the most in a college program? Who are some of the teams you’re interested in?

What I am looking for the most in a college program is someone that develops me and challenges me and pushes me every day to be the best me. I want the program to have a vision for what I can do for the team and use me how they see me fit. I want a program that believes in me and gives me a shot to prove who I am and a shot to show them what I can do to get on that field.
