We caught up with Crown Point High School (Ind.) quarterback Tyce Custy about his recruiting. Custy is a classic under-the-radar quarterback who has grown exponentially over the past two seasons, shooting up from 5-foot-7 to 6-foot-2, and recently picked up an offer from Lindenwood. Here’s a snippet of our conversation:
Tell us about your offers so far. What appeals to you about each school?
I was 5’7” as a freshman and didn’t start varsity as a sophomore. Because of this, my recruiting journey likely started later than others. As of right now, I have been offered by Southern Mississippi and Lindenwood. I am at other stages in the recruiting process with additional schools and coordinating with coaches that would like to see me throw live to further their evaluation.
I was fortunate to receive an invitation to an Elite 11 Regional that I will attend in April. I believe Elite 11 is a good opportunity for me to show where I stand next to some of the top quarterbacks in the country. I am focused on finding the right fit academically and athletically and being somewhere that I can compete and grow. The schools I mentioned have great attributes in those areas for me.
Which schools who haven’t offered you are you interested in and why?
A number of programs have recently started the recruiting process with me. We are doing our best to quickly learn about the schools, their football programs and fit. Some are higher academic schools and others offer a stronger football program.
What do you need to do to take Crown Point back to Lucas Oil? What areas of your game do you need to improve?
Our biggest game of the season is the game we have scheduled that week. Our coaches have instilled a one-week-at-a-time approach in our program. We’ll go as far as we can as a team if each player does their job and we execute. We have to play together as a team, trust our top-of-the-line coaching staff, and rise to the occasion.
I am focused on controlling the things I can control becoming a better leader and quarterback. I’m pushing hard this off-season in the weight room and fine-tuning my mechanics.
Coach Antoine Taylor of Fort Wayne-based MatrixQB has done a great job of QB development. What lessons has he taught you and how has he made you a better player?
I met Coach Taylor in seventh grade at a camp he was working in Indy. We reconnected again before my sophomore season at a camp at Illinois State. Since then, we’ve been in Fort Wayne most weekends for training and we connect during the week to watch film or check in.
Coach Taylor has been important to my all-around development as a quarterback and adding the tools that a quarterback needs in their toolbox. That includes football IQ, leadership, mechanics, the right mental approach, making different throws, and being able to communicate with coaches and teammates. Coach Taylor also works to help me execute and perform the way my coaches at Crown Point expect. I have learned many valuable life lessons through him as well.
What are your other spring visits and dates coming up?
I’ve received a number of Spring Practice, Junior Day and camp invites that we are currently working through. For the next month out, I am set to be at Ball State on 4/16 and Southern Illinois on 4/17.
